Founded in Oslo in 2015 by Anita Schjøll Abildgaard, Iris AI builds an AI engine purpose-built for scientific text, combining years of in-house language and machine-learning models with generative AI to categorise, navigate, summarise and systematise information buried in academic papers and patents. Its tools help research-intensive organisations cut through the growing volume of scientific literature to find relevant prior work faster, supporting R&D, IP and innovation teams who would otherwise rely on slow manual literature reviews.
Founders Factory was among Iris AI's earliest backers, investing in its 2017 seed round, and the company went on to raise a €7.64M Series A in 2024 led by Silverline Capital alongside the European Innovation Council, taking total funding to around €16M. Iris AI's technology has been recognised by Nature and Science Magazine as among the leading tools for AI-powered exploration of scientific literature.
