Founded in 2022 by CEO Ashley Beckwith out of her PhD research in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering at MIT, Foray grows plant cells in bioreactors to produce high-value molecules, materials and even seeds — without needing to grow, harvest or process whole plants. The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company's predictive plant cell culture platform is designed to help industries scale nature-based products without placing further strain on natural ecosystems.
Foray closed a $3M seed round in 2024 led by ReGen Ventures, with backing from The Engine Ventures, Susquehanna Sustainable Investments, Understorey Ventures and Superorganism, following an earlier pre-seed round. The company is using the funding to expand its plant cell culture platform and launch product-development partnerships with early customers.
